Getting the initial scripting done is the first major hurdle.
I suspect that once that's done we can find someone else to
help regularly build/maintain it!

PS: It sounds like it does require a bunch of patches to
underlying libraries.  Have you considered sending bug reports
into those packages to get them fixed?
