python bindings on ubuntu/debian

Would it be advisable to run the python bindings against a different
version of GnuCash than I actually use on a daily basis? Would it be
possible to not install the svn version, ie. compile it and leave it
in the compilation directory so that it doesn't get in the way of my
package-installed version?
