Fancy Date crash

I just committed some changes that should fix the fancy date crasher bug 
(https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=582325). In the process I 
refactored some deprecated guile functions as this was the cause of the bug in 
the first place.

I have tested it, and it seems to work ok. Should there be any problems, just 
let me know.

I send this message mainly to inform you all that I will be out of town until 
Januari, 10th. So I probably won't reply to any questions/remarks before that 
time.
