Good idea. This is what I do (although the packaged version I use for
daily work actually is compiled from SVN, too). Just install it to
~/bin/ and call it with the appropriate command and you can test while
still leaving your main installation intact.

Hm, I wonder what the implications would be both in terms of work and
benefits to the project and the users.
