Default save-as file format: Rather stick to XML?

I agree that the traditional XML format is the logical "default" save-as
choice. I suspect that the database backends will overtake XML for all of
the right reasons in a reasonable timeframe.
Being able to choose the default save-as format in the option pull down menu
may be a good thing for early adopters of the new database backends, while
not causing annoyance to those who are happy with XML. XML should come as
the initial default, with the ability to change the default via the options
menu.
What do you think? Is this an unnecessary waste of volunteer code effort?
