Diagnosing parse errors

I need to diagnose a parse error reading a gnucash file.

This file was written by gnucash 2.2.9; an immediate attempt to re-open
it yields the parse error. No info on stderr or in gnucash.trace.

The longer story is that this started as a 2.0.3 file, opened
successfully in 2.2.9, then immediately saved. Subsequent attempts to
open w/2.2.9 fail. "Check & Repair" didn't seem to help. I don't think
it's the overwriting-with-metadata problem in the FAQ.

Before submitting a bug report, I thought I'd poke around a little and
try to solve it. Can anyone help me get pointed in the right direction?
Is there a way to turn on parser messages? Where is the data file format
documented? Where might I start looking in the source?

thanks for any tips...
