Ok, thanks for your feedback all. I have decided to apply the patch the user
submitted anyway, meaning keep the unresizeable column. It has a very slight
disadvantage compared to full user control, but considering the other design
decisions (one character title and useful tooltip) this is only limited. The
fixed behavior is in any case better than what we had. If full control is
important enough to you feel free to send in a patch for the current code and
I'll gladly apply it.
