This is a user question and should have been asked on gnucash-user.

Do you have a data file open?
If so, did you try: View -> New Accounts Page to open a new Account Tree
Window?

As for a Read Only window, I'm not sure what you mean by that.  Perhaps
you opened a Placeholder Account, which will tell you it is read only?
