I'm 90% sure that my change didn't cause this change.  Regardless, I'm 
about to leave town and won't be able to do anything about it for a few 
weeks.

Does all trace output go to the terminal or only some of it?  What 
parameters are you giving on the command line when you run GnuCash? 
Have you tried changing the parameters you give to see what effect that 
might have?
