This was a great explanation. Have you looked at nvie's post ( http://nvie.com/posts/a-successful-git-branching-model/ )? I think it makes a lot of sense for a project like GnuCash.

Slight nitpick: to my understanding in svn a branch is just a directory that contains a copy of all the project files.
