When to start new threads (was: Re: Comments Regarding New 2.5.1 Register)

I will admit that it's not always clear when your topic differs sufficiently from the original one
to warrant a new thread.

One clue can be: does the current thread subject match what you want to say ?

The original subject in this case was
"Comments Regarding New 2.5.1 Register"
Your message was about 2.5.2 and getting 3 errors when opening a file on Windows. I don't
see not much overlap in these two, except that you both were testing a new development
release (but not even the same one).

Another rule of thumb I usually use is that I only continue a thread if what I have to say is a
direct answer to it. Or a question directly related to it.

Anything else goes into a new thread for me and sometimes I refer to the original thread from
there.

As said this is not exact science and mixed thread are not the end of the world either. I just
brought it up because your message almost got lost in the original thread for me and thought
maybe you were not aware of that effect. Nothing more :)

David (Carlson),

I won't shoot the messenger. Thanks for reporting this. I also found your bug report for
this.

One minor item: please don't hijack a thread. The problem you reported is unrelated to
the discussion that was already going on with David T. Instead of replying to an
existing mail, you should write a new mail in this case.

Hijacking threads makes both conversations harder to follow and find again later on.

Sorry, in my perception at the time, I thought that I was on topic. David C
