While this is a good idea, it may not be necessary.  I helped convert 
another program of similar size as Gnucash to C++ a while ago and we 
mixed code compiled by C and C++ compilers (both gcc and Windows MSVC) 
without problem.  That was a few years ago and things may have changed, 
but it worked well then.
