Or `unset XDG_DATA_DIRS`. Does your distro misconfigure it or did you do that yourself?

The online released user docs are at http://www.gnucash.org/documentation, and the nightly snapshots from git master at http://code.gnucash.org/docs/, where the user docs are in their respective locales and the developer docs are in HEAD.
