Thanks for that information.
For what it’s worth, I was able to insert top level Part designations into the Guide by adding them into gnucash-guide.xml and generate what I think is a correct patch for it. It’s amazing how easy it is to edit the doc files when you follow the instructions at http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Documentation_Update_Instructions ;) Of course, my opinion about the correctness is of limited value; I await the verdict from more experienced people. Please let me know if I have followed this correctly so that I can either steam ahead or learn from my errors.
On the renumbering, I note that gnucash-guide.xml has ENTITY definitions for each chapter, linking them to specific files. Changing these won’t be a major problem at this level, but I don’t understand the internals of DocBook to know whether any cross references in the individual files will require attention if the sequence changes.
