If you really care you could uninstall and reinstall the “official” gnucash.deb and see if it works. If it doesn’t then it would seem that something’s messed up and you should confer with Dimitry to figure out what it is.

Removed my local build and installed the repository version (2.6.19 is
what it found). That worked.
