Crash fix 1.4.12

I just checked in the patch into the 1.4.x branch. 

The 1.5.x series uses gdk multibyte routines for everything; the 
code is quite different; and thus in theory should work.  However,
if you could try it, that would be great.   Note that we are hoping to
have a stable 1.6 in another month or so, and thus now would be a very
good time to update .po files for the 1.5.x series.
