that's not the issue.. the issue is that there is a dev. branch for
the gnome2 port...  The more "gratuitous" changes made to HEAD, the
harder it is to merge later.  David's point was that this would be
better done after the gnome2 merge back into HEAD (so that merging in
the interim is easier).
