If there are new line markers in the text for translation, you should respect 
those and implement them in a position that matches their *grammatical* (i.e. 
not character) position in the original. In the absence of any comments for 
translators, you should be free to make lines shorter or longer in a GUI.

In a CLI, it can be more difficult - I've put a single comment in cashutil and 
pilot-qof so that when those are translated, translators know that a certain 
string is expected to end up a particular length - by adding or subtracting 
whitespace. This is to allow columns of translated text (e.g. help output) to 
line up for readability. Wherever possible, I do this in code to remove the 
burden from the translator. I'd expect that to be typical in other programs - 
wherever there is no specific comment for translators, you should be free to 
use the number and length of words most suitable for the user to understand 
the text.

If it looks right to you when you test in the program, you should be OK.
