equity

Ok, hopefully this question is a little better.

Lets say I open a bank account with a $1000 balance. So, I transfer from
an equity account for that. Then, I have a student loan of $10000, and I
transfer from equity for that. So, my equity accounts would look like:

equity
    |
    --- Retained Earnings: -$1,000
    |
    --- Retained Losses: $10,000

This is correct I hope, as the equity balances should be the opposite sign
to the opposing accounts?

So, that makes my equity balance +$9,000. How do I interpret that? It's
positive, so it looks good, but I know it's bad. ;-)
