How to properly new account an opening balance?

Hi Folks,

I'm pretty new to Gnucash and the probability is high that this is a 
stupid question, but I was not able
to find an answer in the docs or mailing list archive....

How does one give an opening balance to, say a new credit card account 
when it's created?
I tried adding a "beginning balance" to the ledger on my new account, 
but then GNU cash wanted
the money to come from Somewhere, so it made a new account called 
"Imbalance-USD"
