Why no memo field?

Both of these work, but what does NOT seem to work is getting the memo
field to 
print on checks, at least not when using a custom format. This is
puzzling, 
because there is an item in the custom format print menu to position
this field,
but nothing is printed on the check. I asked about this a couple of
weeks ago
and got a deafening silence. Does anybody else print checks with
gnucash?
