Checking and credit card accounts in different currencies

Hello,

I am new to GNU-Cash, but (still) a user of Quicken 2000. I tried to migr=
ate=20
my Quicken accounts to GNU-Cash, and found GNU-Cash a very nice financial=
=20
manager!
Yet, there is a feature I only found in a -in my situation- very troubles=
ome=20
implementation:
Since I am german but curently living abroad, I have checking and credit =
card=20
accounts in both DEM and USD currencies, and I have expenses and income o=
n=20
both kinds of accounts. In Quicken, I categorized all my income and expen=
ses.=20
For both currencies, I used the _same_ categories. I could assign=20
transactions the categories - independent of the currency - directly.
In GNU-Cash, the only way I found to deal with different currencies is th=
e=20
use of a currency account inserted in the middle of a transaction. In som=
e=20
cases, this seems me a good way, since it makes the currency exchange=20
explicitely visble.
In my situation, however, almost _every_ transaction now goes via the=20
currency account. Basically, all my USD income/ expenses go first to the=20
USD-DEM-Trader currency account, from which I distribute them to the inco=
me=20
and expense accounts.
Since this is very troublesome and makes my transactions hard to follow, =
I=20
would like to know whether this is the only way to make transactions betw=
een=20
accounts of different currencies.
If there are other ways - please let me know which.
If not, I'd like to know whether there are plans to simplify=20
the process in the future, e.g. by allowing income/ expense accounts to=20
accept more than a single currency?

Thanks in advance, Arnim
