Same problem here - I'm having trouble with citigroups
accountonline.com, which provides my creditcard-statements.

But it used to work just fine until Dec/00. And the most funny thing
is, that DirectAccess, also citigroup, still works...

I already contacted their helpdesk, they actually had no idea what I
was talking about but took it as I told them. They promised to let the
technicians come back to me via email - I'm still waiting (about 4
weeks ago).

Unfortunately, it doesn't. I also tried to figure out, if some
mime-setting (there is no definition of qif, I also tried to set qif
to "save to disk", none helped) is wrong or so.

But the main problem is, that -at least citigroup- doesn't use a link
to get the qif but a button to initiate the download (because the user
shall select via radiobutton which format he wants). This way they
effectively prevent the user to do what you proposed.

I think, I'll have to call them again.

To the original author: if it's also citigroup, you might want to
report this to citigroups technical helpdesk (find the number on
accountonline's contact page). I'm sure it's always helpful to get a
bugreport not only from one individual.

Up to a solution to be provided by citigroup I use konqueror, which
works fine with accountonline.com, but is not supported by
DirectAccess. Even though only 128bit encryption and javascript are
required by DA (which konqueror does as of their own online tests) but
the "mozilla" string konqueror reports to their server is obviously
not liked.

Sigh.

Hope you guys forgive me this lengthy post, which is not even directly
affecting gnucash ;-).
