Inventory accounts under gnucash?

A proper inventory tracking system is on the agenda, but right now we
don't have any specific facilities for doing so.

The current development release has revamped the currency system
substantially.

Yes, there is, though "near" term is probably unrealistic, at least
for general consumption.  Check the archives of the development
mailing list for the massive thread on the topic.
