FYI,

I just checked in patches that should (significantly) improve the performance 
of opening a register window when there are thousands of transactions in an
account.

However, it is recommended that when viewing a register with thousands of
transactions, that one should set user preferences, 'register' tab, and deselect 
'show all' transactions, and show only the most recent 20-50 ... this 
should avoid most of the heavy lifting of thousands of transactions out
of the database.
