Hey Paul,

in the meantime I found the right packages of libraries for my SuSE 
distribution and GnuCash 1.6.1 is now functioning!
I found them on 

http://www.suse.de/de/support/download/GNOMES/i386/update_for_7_2/base.html

It's not well declarated at all!
