accent marks, keyboard etc (newbie)

Greetings,

I just installed GNUCASH on RH7.
The portuguese version shows a strange behavior: accent marks on the dialogs look weird, and it doesn't accept accent marks (cedilla, grave, acute etc, as input).
Is there any special procedure to set this up on gnucash?
I tried to change the keyboard (104 US-International) using xkeycaps, but didn't succeed. Is the problem on Gnome or X?
Maybe someone can tell me how to get the accent marks correctly on GNOME (or XFree86) using this keyboard...
