It shouldn't be.  If you bought x number of shares yesterday, but
today they tell you that you have a different number of shares, then
you are being swindled.  If the deal is honest, then the number of
shares is exact and unchanging.

Price, by definition, is what you paid for those shares. Ab initio, 
categorically, it is nothing more nor less than the ratio whose
numerator is an amount of currency (dollars) you surrendered and 
whose denomiator is the quantity of shares you received.   *IF* you 
wish, you may apply math skills to convert the fraction into a decimal
number, but technically, precisely speaking, the decimal is not the 
price. The fraction is.
