I don't think it should be the default; one thing that people like, I
believe, is for application data files to be visible to them.  I think
that in certain applications [custom and small-business], it might be
the default ... but for the "freenix public" distributions, I think the
XML should be the default.

Of course, changing between the two should be just a few clicks away.

I think there's enough call to not remove [read: always have] the XML
backend [perhaps with some improvements for back-/foreward compatibilty,
as discussed]; I'd rather have it, myself... and I'd rather have it than
some other ascii/transparent format.   When you say "over time", do you
mean "by 1.8" or at some point later?
