combining accounts

I'm afraid this is a rather non-specific answer, but ...

It seems to me that it would be easy to use Gnucash's Scheme interface
to the Engine or Query API to write some Scheme code to do this.

What I don't understand, though, is how one is supposed to hook new
code like this into the Gnucash GUI.  Does anyone know?

(I know how to hook in a new report, but this isn't a report.)
