Total column for mutual fund shows $0

I don't understand the mutual fund account type.  I just started using
GnuCash for my investments, so I entered one of my mutual funds to
test.  For the opening balance, I just put I put the initial price and
number of shares I invested.  Pretend it was 1000 shares at $1.

In the main window, the Total column for this investment shows $0.00. 
Why is that?  When I run a report on my investments, it shows I have
1000 shares of the mutual fund at $0.00.  Why?  The ledger definitely
shows a price of $1.00.
