problem with creditcard

I must be doing something foolish.  When I send a payment to
a credit card the from my checking account I enter the
payment in the checking ledger but it shows up as a - in the
credit card side as well.  Every time I ballence i need to
fudge by the amount of any payments to make things work.

What am I doing wrong?
