I can't reproduce that error. Umlauts appear correctly in all "text" reports 
(i.e. Balance sheet ["Bilanz"], account summary, etc.). Umlauts do not appear 
at all in any graphical report (pie+bar charts). That is a known error in the 
Guppi libraries and unfortunately it won't be corrected before Gnome 2 is out.

As I said, this is a known problem and it won't be corrected before the Gnome 
2 release. See http://developer.gnome.org/dotplan/schedule/ for the Gnome 2  
release schedule. So even the development versions won't help you with this 
bug at the moment, sorry.
