Problem with generating reports

I'm running into a wall trying to print a transaction report on any of
my accounts. When I have an account highlighted in the accounts window
and select "Transaction Report" from the "Reports" dropdown menu, I get
the following error message:

No matching transactions found
No transactions were found that match the given time interval and
account selection.

I'm never given the opportunity to define the time interval and
account.  Where is the tool that enables me to define these parameters?

I'm running GnuCash 1.6.2 on Red Hat 7.2.
