Stocks and other investment holdings

Hi List,
what is the right way to manage stocks in GnuCash. What I have figured 
out so far
is that I can create a new account of type "Investment" (??) that can 
hold exactly one kind
of investments (e.g. I'm forced to assign a ticker symbol to the account).
Somehow this seems different from the way I'm used to think. What I 
would want is
an account that lets me hold all kind of investment papers and keeps 
track of the
transactions and at the end of the day shows me what is left. Somehow I 
could not
figure out how to do this (and there seems to be no helpful documentation).
