Unfortunately, the simple answer probably won't suffice, but here goes
anyway.

If I remember correctly, to build from source you will need:
g-wrap (1.2.1 for gnucash <= 1.6.8, 1.3.2 for gnucash >= 1.7.0)
gtk 1.2,
a good chunk of the gnome 1.4 libraries (I can't be more specific, I'm
afraid).
gtkhtml,
Guppi
bonobo
oaf

and ALL the -devel packages for the above.

Install all these, run autogen.sh if that's in the source package
(configure if it isn't). Theres probably other stuff I've missed - 
configure will tell you what (always check to see what config.log says
as the error message to the screen is not always the best).
Install the missing packages, and repeat the process until configure
finishes.

Note that Gnucash is a Gnome app - it will run under KDE, but requires
the Gnome libraries.
