Placeholders & Missing Data

Novice question, what is the Placeholder used for? 

I also had an accident using GnuCash since I load all my 
information yesterday I even save it on a specific folder. 
However today that I tried to open it, it wasnt there as all my 
accounts marked 0.00

I went to the folder where I save it, open it but it was blank. 
Maybe is a bug, I will re-build it today. If anyone had a 
similar problem, I would like to hear it.
