Welcome back  :-).

In the Preference dialog (Settings -> Preferences), under the
"International" tab, you will find a drop-down box labelled "Date
Format". Change that to UK.
You may also want to check that your locale is set correctly. I force
this by starting gnucash with the line "LANG=en_AU gnucash", which gives
me $ signs in the right places and things like that.

I'm not sure why that is. All I can suggest is that you live with it and
see if its still the same when 1.8 comes out at christmas.
