Import Problem with check numbers

I've looked through some of the archives but didn't find anything 
pertaining to my problem so here's my question/problem.

Whenever I do an import of my bank data all the checks are placed into 
the 'Unspecified' account and they are not matched as 'duplicates' with 
check entries I've already put into the account.  I'm assuming that 
checks with the same number should at least be flagged as a duplicate.

Has this problem been seen or addressed.  I'm using version 1.6.8 which 
I compiled from source on Mandrake 8.2
