The same as for all other programs (Unix is cool that way); it can also
be overridden (Unix is cool _that_ way, too).  There are a number of
variables: the chief is LANG, which specifies the language.  There are
also LC_CTYPE, LC_NUMERIC, LC_TIME, LC_COLLATE, LC_MONETARY,
LC_MESSAGES, LC_PAPER, LC_NAME, LC_ADDRESS, LC_TELEPHONE,
LC_MEASUREMENT, LC_IDENTIFICATION & LC_ALL.  The locale command is also
useful; locale -a will produce a list of all possible locales.  The
system has a default locale, which you can override.  Normally, the
locale is set when you log in--gdm, for example, lets you choose from a
list.
