version 1.8.1 calendar 'whites out' ?

This is a known bug which no one has been able to fix. It is almost
certainly a gnome bug.

BTW, the behavior is that the calendar is shown the first time it is
used in a register but not on future invocations in that same register.
Reopening a register will allow you to see the calendar -- again, only
once.
