Blush! found the problem. (Finger of course!) Problem was limited memory
on 
video, so of course upping the resolution in X did nothing, because it 
defaulted back to the max graphics resolution memory allowed. Switching
down 
to 65K colours from 16mil, meant that I can now see the actual
resolution.
