Check the archives around Jan 10th 2003 under the heading "Re: compiling gnc 
1.7.7 on SuSE: success" by me, John C Reynolds. It should help you set up on 
SuSE 8.1

I can't remember if you have to add the nls stuff to 8.1, or if it was just 
for 8.0
