Recommended stock account organization?

I'm finally getting my arms around the idea of creating "Stock" accounts for
each commodity, but I'm not quite sure where these accounts should reside or
how many to have. If I have a brokerage account and a 401(k) and both
contain shares of XYZ, do I create two Stock accounts, one under each, both
pointing to XYZ, or do I have just one XYZ account somewhere else? The
former is more precise, but the latter seems a bit easier. What are the
implications of each way wrt. reports, graphs, etc?

Thanks,
jim

P.S. I noticed that for the default accounts gnucash broke out a 'stocks'
account separately under both 'brokerage' and 'retirement', so I think the
split approach is recommended.
