Stock Entries

Setting up my new GnuCash account was going well until I tried to insert
some stock values.  Here is an example that shows the problem:

100 shares of Acme stock at $20 a share = $2000

The register for Acme stock shows the correct values;
The account sheet shows Acme stock = $0.00;
The balance sheet shows Acme stock = $4,000, twice the correct value.

Did I miss a step somewhere?
