Gnucash 1.7.7 hang on startup

GnuCash 1.7.7 is hanging on startup.  I had just used it to add a
couple of transactions and change some scheduled transactions.  In
particular, and maybe relevant, I changed the "enter X days in
advance" setting on three transactions to enter them 15 days in
advance, and to enter them automatically.  For one of those
transactions, the 15 days in advance is, I think, today.

After saving and exiting, I tried to restart and GnuCash displays the
splash screen and gets to the "loading data" part.  The CPU load stays
high, a window flashes and disappears too fast to see, the CPU load
drops and nothing happens.

Running gnucash --debug shows the following:
