Reconciliation starting balance

Hi,

I'm having trouble cleaning up an old reconciliation problem in one
of my accounts. In order to get back to a "known good" state, I
cleared a couple month's worth of reconciled transactions so that
GnuCash and my bank statements would agree at least up to that
point. I was hoping I would then be able to re-reconcile the months
that I cleared, and move on from there.

The problem is that when I go to reconcile the account, the previous
ending balance GnuCash shows does not match the bank's statement.
However, it obviously should, as I took the last ending balance on
that date, subtracted uncleared transactions prior to that date, and
came up with the right number. So my question is, how does GnuCash
determine what the starting balance is when I go to reconcile the
account, if not by totaling all reconciled transactions up to a
certain date, or all reconciled transactions in general? How can I
fix this?

Many thanks,
