Account Heirarchies

As a non-accountant I have been under-utilizing gnucash as my checkbook
manager. Recently I expanded its usage to include some of my investments.
This has raised a question regarding accounts, their hierarchy and the
resulting parent-child relationships.
Regarding the parent-child relationships I have not found any good description
in the current documention. Therefore, I assume in the account tree the
child's information passes up to the parent where it is merged with
information from its peer child accounts and data directly input to the
parent account. If this is true are there any restrictions on parent-child
combinations, there does not seem to be. What combinations are preferred,
logical, which ones are not. If this is true, does debit data get merged
with debit data or does it get cross over with some parent-child
combinations.
I hope this question makes sense, if not feel free to just disregard.
By the way this is a super program and I understand it takes time and effort
to complete OpenSource projects as well as proprietary ones.
