Taking the plunge...

This implies that you have the wrong version of g-wrap installed...
You need g-wrap (and g-wrap-devel, if installing from a binary
package) version 1.3.4 in order to compile gnucash-1.8.  Most likely
you still have the older version of g-wrap installed.
