lan file update failure

in RH9 I find that GnuCash 1.8.1 will no longer properly save 
over samba shares. It does just fine on a local drive.

What appears to happen is that the original file is left as is 
and the newer, updated version, is left in the log pile as a 
temp file.

Trying to upgrade to 1.8.7 but that is another known headache I 
haven't been able to devote a couple of weeks full time to 
solving yet.
